Question
Hello,
This morning I had to put to sleep my beautiful Rex Rabbit Oscar. He was nearly 8 years old. I am a little wrought with guilt. It was done by a kind Vet with anesthetic and said that there maybe spasms. I think I saw his fur gentling moving. Is this normal? Also, do you know how long Rex Rabbits usually live for? He was a very proud rabbit and couldn't go to the toilet by himself anymore. I hope I didn't deprieve him of some more time. And lastly, do you know anywhere I can find information on grief to do specifically with Rabbits. We were very close and I am devastated. Many Thanks. Can understand if you can't answer all my questions without facts. Monica.

Answer
Dear Monica,

A well cared-for rabbit can live 8-14 years, depending on genetics, husbandry, and luck.  I'm not sure what you mean when you say his "fur was gently moving."  There may have been movement under the skin, but I cannot tell what you are asking.

I'm also not sure what you mean by his not being able to go to the toilet by himself any more.  Did you mean that he could not urinate without having his bladder expressed?  Or that he had runny stool?  Either of those problems are manageable, and do not require euthanasia--but it's a bit late for me to advise you now.

I am very sorry about your loss.  For support, you might wish to join EtherBun:  www.bio.miami.edu/hare/etherbun.html  a free listserve about rabbit care. There are over 4000 subscribers, and many will be able to offer you support privately, as well as direct you to other sources.

I hope this helps.  Please write back if you have any other questions.
