Bunny gathering Hay

Question
Hello, I have two bunnies mini rex. that are in the same cage with a divider down the middle so there will be no funny play going on one male one female( they are brother and sister), they were born February 13th 2012 they have been separated since I have received them (10 weeks old).  The female rabbit has began to gather hay in large bunches in her mouth and seems to be making a nest. I do not want more bunnies and waiting for the best time to spay/neuter them. In some research I have found males can be fixed around 4 months and the females 5 months. Just want to make sure that there is no chance of babies, in my reading it can be false pregnancy?

Also what is your recommendation on fixing the rabbits. I am looking to do it at the right time, where the bunnies health is best, and less stress on the two of them.

Thank you in advance.
Tina

Answer
Hi Tina,

If you are 100% certain that she has not been in contact with the male bunny then she is having a false pregnancy.  This is really common in rabbits and as you suspected it is time to get her spayed.  The age of spaying/neutering would really depend on your vet.  Our vet will spay at 3 months and neuter as soon as the testicles have descended.  Another vet in our area will not do this until 6 months old because she believes that young rabbits have a higher incidence of GI problems, which in fact may be true.  There is really no set age you just want to make sure that whatever vet you choose has experience spaying/neutering them.

Good luck

Pam
