Is there something wrong with my bunnies?

22 11:16:18

Question
My bunnies stopped eating. A couple days ago the store that carried their normal food was closed for the day, so we got them a small bag of a different kind of food for them to eat untill we could get them their normal food. It didn't surprise me when they didn't eat that food because they are not used to that food, but then we got them the food they always eat and they didn't eat that eather. Its been a couple days now and I'm really worried about them. so last night I gave them celery and tomato, and they didn't eat it at first but when I woke up alot of it was gone. I washed their bowls and gave them gresh food and water and I just dave them cherios to see if they would eat them. One of them ate a cherio then lyed down to rest with her friend. But they wont eat their regular food and when i try to hand feed them hay they just break it into peaces. I don't know if they are drinking water or pooping but I'm trying to see if they are. What should I do?

Answer
Dear Kate,

The new food might have triggered this, but there is almost certainly an underlying health problem here.  Please read:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sickbun.html

for information on how to tell if a bunny is sick, and what to do.  This time of year, consider the heat, if they are outdoors or not in air conditioning.  Rabbits cannot handle temperatures above 80 Farenheit well, and may become very sick if they cannot get into a cool refuge.

Also please read:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/diet.html

and the most common cause of inappetence/illness besides incorrect diet, dental problems:

You can find a good rabbit vet to help you here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

But waste no time getting them there for a full exam. Their behavior is not normal, and could signal something serious that needs to be treated, lest it become worse.

I hope this helps.
