Netherland Dwarf Eye Spot

Question
My son's 8 month old buck netherland dwarf rabbit has a spot on the inner cornea of one of his eyes.  We have had two vets look at it.  Both have thought it might be an inner eye infection.  The rabbit's eye is not seepy but looks healthy except for this spot.  The spot recently seems to be moving to the surface and another spot on the cornea appears to be starting.  This rabbit acts healthy.  The doctor told us eye drops would not reach the problem.  My son's buck is part of a breeding pair for 4-H. Have you ever seen this type of problem?  I don't think the vets were confident in their assessment of the bunny.

Thank,
Jill

Answer
I don't suppose there is a veterinary opthamologist in your area to give a more accurate assessment?

I've seen things like this before.  Things like an abscess, e cuniculi, some other sort of parasite in the eye come to mind.  If it were glaucoma or a cataract, I am guessing the vets would know what that looks like, so it isn't one of those.

If it is an abscess, it may also be behind the eye.  You would know because the eye would start bulging out.  If it is a parasite, you can't get rid of it.  I've seen a few other causes that can be controlled by eyedrops, but I would have to check with the owners to see what it is.

A veterinary opthamologist would be your best bet, if there is one in your area.  It's most likely not genetic, but, I would let a professional make that assessment.
