Question
hi, my name is Anna, just yesterday, February 6, my bunny who is not even a year had little kits. i was not expecting this and she did not make a nest out of her fur nor the hay. thats what concerned me the most. i but a box with hay in her cage and placed the kits within. there were 5 all together, 2 died Saturday then the rest died Sunday the next day. I'm not sure but i think she was confused and didn't know what to do with them. when she would go in the nest she was very rough and knocked the kits around. Sunday i found that the kits were askew around the box and all dead. but she made a fur bed and nest and seems that she is still going at it. I'm worried that she's going at it all backwards and i feel horrible. and i cant believe she's pregnant again, right? she just had the kits! so please help I'm very worried about my bunny. and her little boyfriend has been separated from her!

Answer
Hi Anna. I am a bit confused. I am understanding that your doe had babies Saturday and didn't make a nest for them. That you then added a box with hay, put the babies in but that the doe did not make a nest and trampled on the little ones. That then on Sunday, after all of the little ones were dead, that your doe built a nest and pulled fur in the box and you are thinking that she is going to have more babies. Is this correct? Sometimes first time moms get things wrong and do not do things in the order they should. Your doe has probably built her nest because she knew that she needed to, not understanding that the kits had died. If your buck has not been with your doe since she had the kits she will not be pregnant again. If you put the two back together you will have more babies in about one month. Bucks and does can not live in the same cage or room of the house. Your doe will be pregnant all the time. Female rabbits can get pregnant at four months of age. Unless you really want baby rabbits I suggest that you get your male neutered. I'm sure your female would agree.:o)   Pat
