Sick Wild Rabbit - what to do

Question
Hi,
I found a rabbit sitting in the middle of a lane outside the airfield where I fly last night.  When I approached it, it didn't move.  It's eyes were completely white with pus and its face fur was matted.  I picked it up and put it under a bush.  I have been feeling guilty ever since. I feel sure that it had myxematosis.  What SHOULD I have done?  I didn't want to kill it - I would have probably botched it up and made things worse.  I could have taken it to a vet but it would have taken a while, and stressed an already sick animal.
Is there a right course of action for if it happens again? I'm experienced with house bunnies but I really don't know how to deal with wild rabbits because I know that they are so easily stressed.
Thanks, in advance, for your advice.

Answer
Hi John,

it might be a domestic rabbit.  If it is any color other than a wild rabbit, it is a domestic.  Even if fit appears like a wild rabbit, there are domestic breeds that look like wild rabbits.  Generally the wild ones even if sick don't let people touch them.

You may want to check and see if he's still where you left him.  I'd get a little carrier and take him to a vet.  If it is what you think, they could either try to give him supportive therapy (as some survive), or he would euthanize him and end his suffering.

The stress of going to the vet probably isn't factoring high right now with him, because he is that sick that he didn't move when you got to him.  So there is a good chance the car ride won't make things worse.

See if you can get him and get him to a good rabbit vet.  Not all vets are.  If you want to make sure he'd see a good rabbit vet around where you are, look here:

www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

and find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet near you.  Explain the situation fully to the vet as to what you think is going on.

Thanks for caring about this little guy.
