Breeding a mini lop

Question
I acquired this passed summer a broken black Mini Lop Buck. It is a blanket. What colors can I mate him to? And what pairing could give me more of different coloring and in patch pattern?

Answer
Mini lops actually allow so many colours and colour is so unimportant for showing that almost anything can be bred to him safely. The very best would be solid or broken black, blue, chocolate, lilac, tortoiseshell (black, blue, chocolate, or lilac), sable, seal, or smoke pearl. Solid or broken chestnut, opal, lynx, chocolate chestnut, chincihlla (any of the chinchilla varieties) will also cross well. Solid or broken steel can cross okay, but sometimes it results in some poor steel colouring.

Breeding to an agouti colour like chestnut, opal, lynx, chocolate chestnut, or chinchilla will definitely give you a chance of getting something other than black. You will have a definite chance of solid and broken chestnuts with any of those crosses. Other colours will depend on what genes both parents are hiding.

Blanket pattern is very, very common in mini lops, so it can be hard to break away from it. The best way to try to do so is to breed to one without a blanket pattern, and then a lot is still up to luck. However, you can get patch patterns out of solid x blanket pattern or even blanket pattern x blanket pattern. The pattern on a broken is a lot up to luck of the draw. Of course, if the parent's have a certain pattern, it is more likely the offspring will as well, but it is not guaranteed.
