boil on hind leg

Question
our 5  yr old female house rabbit has developed what looks
like a boil on her back leg, poking out of her fur. it doesn't
seem to cause her any pain, but it's recent, and we were
wondering whether it's serious.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Luke and Kate,

anytime a noticeable growth like this occurs (and luckily in your case the first time in 5 years), it is always good to get your rabbit vet to check it out.  To us it's just a growth, but to them they may determine it's an infection or a tumor.

In any case, even though you say it's not affecting her mobility, it could get larger, and if it's an infection it could spread into the bone or her bloodstream, and then it's much worse.

The best thing to do is take her in to your rabbit vet for a diagnosis and options for treatment.  As she is 5, and her next birthday she technically becomes a geriatric bunny, it would be good to get it looked at before a sore develops and it gets worse.

Feel free to write back anytime. Let me know what it turns out to be and what course of treatment you take.
