Help giving rabbit pills

Question
My rabbits were staying at my parent's house during my move and found an old pack of rat poisoning pellets.  They may have ingested some, so I immediately took them to the vet.  They were both given a shot of Vitamin K, but now I need to give them vitamin K in the form of pills for 3 weeks.  Any tips on how to make this easy?  The vet said that if I have to, I should force it down their throats, but I don't think I can do that.

Answer
Hi Jenny

If you are able to crush it up try mixing it up real well in some yogurt.  Some rabbits love yogurt and others don't.  There is a product called Baby-yo and it is in most large supermarkets.  If you can't get the rabbit to eat just yogurt then try mixing it in baby yo.  Put is in a 10 ml syringe and give it a very tiny bit at a time so that it doesn't choke.  Usually they will say... hmmm this tastes pretty good and maybe I should eat it.

Your vet should be able to show you how to syringe feed.  If  he didn't instruct you how to do this then maybe you need another vet.

I am so sorry your rabbit is ill.  I am also sorry I don't have much experience in giving meds to my own rabbits.  When I do have to give it to them I use the old syringe trick giving about 1 drop at a time.

I hope your bunny gets well soon.

Sincerely

Pam
