Answer
Hi Mrs. C.,

it could be several things. To be certain you need a vet to diagnose your rabbit.

He could be suffering from mange (a type of mite).

He could be suffering from another type of mite or lice.

He may have an illness that has a symptom of hair loss an/or flaky skin.

He could have fleas and his scratching has affected his skin.

He may not be hydrated enough and as we are heading into winter (less humidity) and it may be affecting his skin.  The change of seasons to drier conditions could do this if he isn't drinking enough to compensate.

Has he been exposed to any chemicals or something that could have gotten onto his hair or back?

I would be very careful brushing him as to not scratch or cause the skin to bleed as it could become infected rather easily.  Until you can get to your vet, get some preparation H and apply it to the bare/flaky areas as this will help the irritated and dry skin try to repair itself.  This is not a final solution but merely a stopgap measure.

The real solution is to get your rabbit into your normal vet as soon as possible.  He/she would be able to help figure out what the problem is and get treatment for it going.

Please get your rabbit to your vet as soon as possible.  On the off-chance you don't have one (and after 9 years I am truly hoping you do), go to  www.rabbit.org\vets
and find a House Rabbit Society-recommended vet in your area.
