Question
I have read that rabbits can take cat hairball remedy like Petromalt. How much would you give a 5 Lb. rabbit.  My bun is having a big molt and with the extra hair coming out, I wondered if at these times he could have the hair ball remedy. He always has plenty of hay and runs around the house for exercise. He is 1 year old, Lionhead. I inherited him, and he isn't that tolerant of being brushed. I get most of it with my hands, but there are places I can't get.

Answer
Dear Kathleen,

I used to think that petroleum laxatives were beneficial for hairball prevention in rabbits, but now I think they may do more harm than good.  What's most important is to keep the intestinal contents *very well hydrated* by making sure the bunny has plenty of fresh water (in a bowl, not a bottle) available at all times, and by serving a large salad of *wet* leafy greens daily.  This, along with unlimited timothy hay, will keep the intestine moving well and able to push any ingested hair through the works.

Petroleum laxatives may actually *coat* a mass of fur and food in the stomach or intestine, keeping it from becoming hydrated. This could cause a painful mass moving through the gut, or even slow it down, rather than make it easier to pass.

Brushing and grooming are also important, even if he doesn't like it.  Use moist hands to rub him back and forth.   You'd be amazed what comes off, just sticking to the wetness of your hands!

Hope this helps!  Please write back if you have any other questions.
