Question
I have recently purchased two mini rex and two holland lops.  Each set is a boy and girl.  I was wondering if I could put the two boys together and the two girls together even though they are different rabbits.  I currently have the two mini rex rabbits in separate cages because they are almost at the age of breeding.  I just got the lops and was trying to save myself from buying two more cages.  What are your suggestions?

Answer
Hi Patti,
I don't recomend putting 2 males together usually...as they will eventually fight. If they are very young, under 3 months it would be ok for a while, but as soon as they become "mature" around 5 months they would start to fight. It does however rarely happen that the males are ok for life.. but if not the best way would be to have one of the males neutered.  The females should be ok together, again,as long as they are put together at a young age. If they adapt well together, they most likely will always be good together. Sometimes if one is spayed it works better when there is fighting.  Mixing the 2 breeds is never a problem....some people have guinea pigs with their rabbits!
So basically the answer to your dilemma would be to spay one of the males, otherwise there will be definate nasty fighting after their sexual maturity...I wish you luck! I myself have 4 rabbit hutches to keep clean and is a huge job!! So I understand your thoughts.
All the best,Elizabeth
