Question
my daughters Californian is in labor. About 9:00 am she noticed she was in labor. The doe was in the nest box, she open the cage to see if she already had the babys and noticed that something was sticking out of her canal. There were no babies. she left and checked on her around 2:00 and still no babies. She checked again around 9:00 pm and still no babies. But the thing in her canal was still there but it was out a little more. what should we do?

Answer
If you cannot get her into an emergency vet, you can follow this process:

Get some mineral oil (vegetable oil will work, but mineral oil tends to work better). Soak the doe's hind end in a tub of warm water to loosen the vent area. Once you have soaked the area for about 10 minutes, cover the vent area in the mineral oil to help the baby slide out. If the baby moves a little, you can re-oil the area.

Grasp the kit firmly at a solid part. It will be dead by this point, so do not worry about hurting it. When the doe has a contraction, hold the kit in place. Do not actually pull, as this will harm the doe. Instead, just keep the kit in place so that her contractions can continue to push it out, but the kit does not slide back in. After a few contractions, the kit should be out or almost out. If not, repeat the process.

It is extremelly likely that all the kits behind the stuck one will also be dead, but you can save the doe this way.
