Digger!

Question
Good Morning!
I recently got a new rabbit and for the first couple of weeks he was very VERY lazy. He just layed, slept, and ate. Now, he is a compulsive digger...through all hours of the day and night you can bet that he is digging. Its not really a big deal to me, I tune it out. What I'm wondering is if there is something wrong with him. Could it be that he is unhappy or bored? I do let him hop around my room freely and take him for short walks on his leash. He also has a few toys in his cage that he DOES NOT ever play with. I just want to make sure that this digging isn't a sign that something is wrong.

Thanks!

Answer
On the health front, there's nothing wrong with him, digging is a natural behavior.

I have had some rabbits that will dig to show me their unhappiness with a situation, like having gone to the vet.  But your question sounds like a rabbit being a rabbit.

For some rabbits, it could be a little bit of boredom, but for others, it's their favorite pastime.

On the boredom front, I've gone through a lot of toys trying to figure out what my rabbits will play with.  Somethings I've had success with our cardboard boxes, the willow toys and chews from Bunny Bytes, towels, plastic baby keys.  Here's a list of toys to try to fight off boredom: http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/toys.html

If your rabbit is one of those who just loves to dig, you'll have to watch that he's not tearing up your flooring.  Some of my rabbits take my vinyl flooring as a personal challenge, and as a result, I have a few holes.  Some rabbits will love to dig a towel set in a box, or their cage.  But the best thing I've found for a digger is a phonebook.  I don't know why, but this is a great big toy for my diggers.  I've got one, who can tear up half a phonebook in 12 hours.
