Breeding compatibility for Chin mini rex

Question
I have a few Chinchilla colored mini rex.  I want to get another color but would like to have something that is compatible to breed with chins.  Since they are ringed colors could they be bred to other ringed colors?

Answer
Ok this is complicated so without confusing you with boring genetics I will try to explain this in plain English.  First the Black Chin is the only accepted chin color currently showable in mini rex.  The four basic colors of rabbits, black, blue, chocolate and lilac can all have variations with the chin gene, both in agouti and tan patterns.  The black agouti (the chin) is the only currently accepted variation for competition in this breed.

It is best to breed chin to chin only.  When you start breeding chins to other colors such as seals you will ruin the surface color and your rabbits will not be showable.

Basically breeding chin's to any of the other recognized colors you will get 100% castors with poor coloring.

If you would like to add a new color to your show stock I would suggest starting with a self color (black, blue, chocolate, lilac)  Try getting a good broken mate of the same color or compatible color (black to blue)(chocolate to lilac).  See what pops up in your nest box.  Make a decision of what color you want to show and work on it.  You can always change colors as often as you want.  The otters are the new thing.  You can get otters in all the same colors as the selfs and are all showable, but all shown together in one group.  You can also breed otters to self's and if you have a nice chocolate doe bred to a black otter you could end up with a chocolate otter etc.  Breeding is fun and its always a treat to see what is in the nest box but remember that all those bunnies that aren't showable have to end up somewhere.
