Question
Hello Sarah,
I have a rabbit purchased from a pet store that I was told was a mini rex but I'm sure now that he's not.His ears are too big and his hair is starting to lie down. He is now about 7 to 8 months old and I would like to know at what age will he stop growing. I want to build him a better cage but don't want to start if he'll get bigger still. He's about 3 to 4 pounds now but that's just a guess. Happpy New Year

Answer
Pet mini rex can look different than show quality ones. Long ears are very common on pet ones as breeding two show quality ones always has the chance of producing "non-dwarf" mini rex. These are ones that are lacking the dwarfing gene which causes them to have the short ears and very small size. By 8 months he should be done growing. Only giant breeds usually grow past 8 months of age.

A coat that lacks proper density or texture can also lie quite flat. If it is silky in texture, a mini rex coat will commonly lie flat. However, it should still feel different from a regular rabbit's fur.
