Growth or swelling near bunnys vagina

Question
Our female dwarf bunny Shorbie, has what looks like a swollen vagina with sores on it or a growth on it.  There was a large clump of poo stuck on her and we pulled it loose to find the swelling and sores.  We took her to a vet who checked her, cut the hair around it and gave us an antibiotic ointment to put on the sore part, but they said they didn't know what it was because they don't usually treat bunnies.  I wish they had said that when I asked if they treated bunnies and before I paid them $108!  Now I don't know what is wrong with her.  Have you heard of anything like this?

Answer
Dear Randie,

I really, really hope that vet took a good look at the lesion.  Is there any possibility that there are maggots inside?  Please have a VERY close look and check for anything moving.  If there is an opening to the lump, get some povidone iodine solution and flush it, full strength, into the opening and see if anything comes out.

Please use the list linked here:

to find a good rabbit vet and get the bunny there ASAP in case this is fly strike (attacked by flies who laid eggs, which now may be inside the lump eating at the bunny's living flesh).

I hope this isn't the problem, but since she had mushy poop stuck to her bum, this is a possibility, and if it *is* fly strike it is a life-threatening emergency that must be treated NOW.

Another possibility is that it's an abscess, or a botfly warble (less deadly than blowfly maggots, but just as disgusting).  A good rabbit or exotics vet will be able to do a good exam and tell you.

Please let me know how it goes!
