leaving cecal pellets all over cage

Question
I have a 3 month old Holland lop.  I feed him ulimited pellets (Nutriphase) unlimited hay(timothy and oat) and some green leafy vegetables.  Each morning I find a large amount of cecal pellets left behind.  This has been going on since I brought him home- probably about a month.  So yesterday I tried leaving his pellets off his diet.  Noticed he consumed much more hay and this morning no cecal pellets left in his cage.  Here is my issue - everything I read says to provide unlimited pellets for a rabbit of that age yet this must be what's causing the problem.  What do u suggest? Thanks.

Answer
Dear Heather,

It's true that a bunny getting a very rich diet will often ignore his cecotropes and eat fresh food instead.  I think you're very smart to limit his pellets, even though he's still growing.  As long as he gets unlimited timothy hay, he should be fine.  You don't have to starve him of pellets.  Just give him no more than he'll polish off in about half a day, and that will train him to eat more hay, which is the most important part of his diet.

Good luck, and please write back if you have any other questions.
