Question
QUESTION: Dear Pam,
I just noticed a small red dot(very small)near the eye of my 2yr old dwarf rabbit. It seems that there is no hair on the spot.Could it be an insect bite?It seems that it is not bothering her as she is eating, drinking and doing her behavior is as normal.Your insights are much appreciated.
Thanks for your dedication the good work you are doing.

ANSWER: Hi Mara

As long as there isn't excessive fur loss and it is most likely a bee sting or spider bite.  If there is fur loss in the area you may want to consider that she could have flea's or mites.  Normally unless you see a whole bunch of these spots we generally don't worry to much about them.

I hope your little angel is ok.

Good luck

Pam

QUESTION: Dear Pam,

Yes it is the only one she has.  I am cleaning it with just water on a cotton pad once a day.  She is letting me doing it.  Should I use an ointment or some kind of healing gel?  If she ahs fliea's or mites what should I do?

Thanks again for your help.

Answer
Hi Mara

You can use a triple antibiotic ointment but make sure it is plain neosporin and not neosporin plus.  As long as it isn't red and full of pus I wouldn't worry to much about antibiotic's.  I would just make sure to keep it clean.

If a rabbit ever gets flea's or mites it needs to be treated by a vet.  They use a product called Revolution (selemectin).  They put a few drops on the back of the neck.  Generally at the time of the first treatment the vet will show you how to do the treatments by yourself.  It is extremely important to go to a vet the first time you notice flea's or mites.  The reason is that if a rabbit has an underlying illness the medication can cross the blood brain barrier and kill the bunny.  If the bunny tolerates the treatment well the first time the vet will usually allow you to to any follow up treatments on your own.

Good luck with your bunny and please let me know when the sore gets better.

Sincerely

Pam
