QuestionHi i just got my first rabbit very recently and when i bought it the pet shop owner recommended the pine shavings i'm currently using as litter to put in the litterbox and just generally in the cage. However i just read online that pine shavings are harmful except maybe the oven/kiln dried ones. The problem is, how do i know for sure that the pine shavings i am using are over/kiln dried and therefore definitely safe? Though it writes on the package that the pine is oven/kiln dried and therefore contains no aromatics i am a bit cautious about just believing that. Is there any other way to confirm?
AnswerHi,
I just avoid any pine shavings. There are natural chemicals in pine shavings (not lumber) that produce problematic vapors. Phenols. Hard on the lungs of these little guys, they are irritants.
Best litter (and one of the lest expensive) is hardwood wood stove fuel pellets. They are compressed sawdust pellets that people buy in 40 pound bags to heat homes, etc. But they are EXCELLENT litter. Safe, no vapors, inexpensive by volume, EASY to see what needs to be scooped out and replaced. They are the best for your dollar and safe for bunny.
