Bunny Nails

Question
I just recently bought a Lion head Bunny. Super cute and adorable. I have a question about his nails. They are razor sharp and everytime I try to put him in his cage, he scratches the heck out of me. I'm not comfortable clipping his nails, but what about filing? I don't even want to take him out of his cage, because it is a nightmare trying to get him back in the cage. Also.. am I suppose to leave the cage on the floor with the door open so he knows that's his home and will get into it on his own when he's done playing? I need a little help here. I don't want to give up this easily. I'm use to Dogs and Cats, so this is a whole new ballgame for me. Where I live I'm not allowed to have a Dog or Cat. Can Ya help? One other thing. It takes me like 20 minutes to catch him when he's out of his cage, will he ever just let me pick him up or does he need to be wore out from all the running to the point he's too tired to care.

Thanks,
Tammy

Answer
Hi Tammy,

If you get some cat nail clippers and just nip all the ends it is going to be a lot easier than filing.  Rabbits don't like to hold still as you have probably realized.  If you take him to the vet for a check-up the assistants can show you how to clip his nails.

As for catching him you are better off trying to tempt him back into his cage.  You shouldn't let him run around unsupervised unless your home is completely bunny proofed.  Sometimes it is easier to bunny proof one area and shut the door or put up a baby gate.

Good luck
