amputee rabbit with messy litterbox habits

Question
I have a rear leg amputee rabbit.  He lives indoors in a 6' by 4'puppy pen with carpet and vinyl underneath and towels and underpads that are  used for people to absorb urine.  He pees anywhere.  Especially around his hay or food.  And just lays in it as he eats.  He could get around easily but laying in it doesn't bother him.  He is fixed and has always had extremely sloppy bathroom habits, before amputation. He always peed and pooped just about anywhere. His fur is matting from urine. I wash his tail area every other day under sink to get off dried poops and pee.  I  work and am not around all day to wash him at any time.  Fur is matting bad from pee.  What can I do, afraid it will lead to problems and urine scald.  Also pees in his hay.  I put it in a shallow bowl and that problem is better now.

Answer
Dear Barbara,

Is the bunny neutered?  I'm sure you know that if he's not, this could be contributing to his poor hygiene.

But another possibility might be that he's not too keen about jumping into the box to do his biz.  You might try cutting down one side of a litterbox and see if he prefers that.  But no guarantees, if he's always been this way.  :(

To help prevent urine scald, you might want to invest in some artificial fleece beds from Palacepet.com  They are great for wicking away moisture and keeping it off the bunny's fur and skin, even if he's a slob.

I hope that helps!
