Is it too late to have my pig neutered?

Question
We just got a miniature pig from a friend down the road.  He weighs approximately 30 pounds and has already sired a litter of piglets but as far as age goes we have no idea when he was born.  Today he started humping my leg, is it too late to have him neutered?  Will that quell the smell and the desire for him?

Thank you for your time and expertise on this matter!

Answer
It's never too late to neuter a male pig, but it does become important to find a veterinarian who has neutered pot-bellied pigs before. There is a slight anatomical difference, and a couple of extra stitches are needed to make sure the intestines don't herniate.

Male pigs are able to father children when they are as young as 8 weeks old, so your pig could be anywhere from 3 or 4 months old to 1 year. If he is starting to show tusks, he's probably at least 6 months old. Your vet will be able to tell exactly how old he is by looking at his teeth.

The smell and behavior will disappear after his neuter. The older the pig, the longer it takes for all the odor to vanish and all the behavior to stop. 30 days after neutering the pig should be sterile and the odor should be dramatically reduced or gone completely. The behavior might continue for a while longer simply because it's become a habit, and he might need a little bit of gentle training to learn new habits.
