Question
Hi there I just got my mini pig "Piggy smalls" and hes really aggresive. He is only 9mnts, i tried to see if his testicles have droped but he will chomp at me and consitantly try to hump me. I know he doesnt mean any harm its in his nature, but is there anything i can do will he ever learn that when i say no it means no? or does he have to be fixed? He also did a very strange this this weekend, he started humping my friends male dog and ejaculated :| i dont know what to do about this l'd feel horrible if this forced me to give him up to a hobby farm. I just want to make sure ive tried everything before i give up. I picked him up from a house about a week ago and he was very neglected over fed with a soiled bottom and eyes crusted shut. He has made improvemnts already as i can actually sit here and type this while we cuddle, but it seems when he is determind to hump nothing else matters. Please help me! i love the little guy and have lots of faith in him being a great addition to my home. SOS !!!!

Answer
Intact male pigs are not good house pets, neutering makes all the difference. Intact pigs are driven by hormones. They hump everything, constantly. They pace, foam at the mouth, and secrete an odor that female pigs adore. Most people find the odor really unpleasant.

A month after neutering, a male pig will not foam or smell. The humping decreases dramatically, and will continue to decrease as time goes on.

Pigs are smart and fairly easy to train, but intact males are the most difficult because their mind is not on learning but on humping. Harness training is important because once a pig learns to walk on a harness, the pig will always remember. Trick training really isn't about the tricks, it's about the person and pig learning to communicate with each other.

There's a list of vets that see pot-bellied pigs here www.farec.org

The chomping could signal different things, but I suspect it's because he's still apprehensive of you and his new environment, and frustration because he wants to hump something.

Also, I highly recommend the book Pot-Bellied Pig Behavior and Training by Priscilla Valentine. Pris really understands how pigs think and why they do the things they do.
