Adopting An Older Pig

Question
Can you tell me the pros and cons on adopting an older pig? I am interested in a 12-year old. I also have an Old English Sheepdog, do you think they will be alright together? Thank you!

Answer
Hello Lincoln,
You have an interesting question!
I think that adopting an older pig can be done but it could be more difficult.  You will need to do your home work.
I would ask you:
How much do you know about this pig?
For example:
1.  How long have you known this pig or are you buying sight unseen?
2.  Has the pig already been around other animals (large dogs)?
3.  What kind of personality does this pig have?
4.  How large is the pig?
5.  Can you easily transport the pig.
6.  Has the pig had any medical problems that you might be     taking on?
7.  Has the pig been neutered or spayed?
These are just some of the issues you need to consider before taking on an older possibly spoiled Pot Bellied Pig.
Depending on the circumstances you might be taking on someone elses problems.
Most Pot Bellied Pigs have a life span of 12 to 17 years.  You might be taking on an animal that could pass away very soon.
If you are taking an older pig because you can't afford a piglet you could really pile up expenses with Vet bills, destruction if the pig is larger, feed, housing to contain it and of course the emotional attachment and possibly loosing it to old age in the near future.
I hope this helps you in making your decision.
Take care,
Patty
