Question
I adopted two females aprox 1.5 years old. They are great until they come into heat. Is there any hormone therapy out there to help them get through this, I don't have a vet that will perform a OH at this age. thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
Oh, we all wish there was a "cure" for piggy PMS!
Unspayed potbellied pigs have very high hormone lebvels every 21 days, for about 5 days. They will mount objects, abandon potty habits, wander off, scream, quit eating, and become obnoxious. For these reasons, early spaying is a must.
Vets are reluctant to spay older pigs because they usually are overweight. Our vet puts them on diets, then spays safely. We have had them spayed up to age 5. Usually the state vet school will spay these pigs.
A well trained pig will usually not be too obnoxious, they understand the word NO" quite well.
Please consider our book, "Potbellied Pig Behavior and Training" on sale at our website, valentinesperformingpigs.com
We can give you the "tools" to manage this behavior.
Bless you for rescuing these girls!
Good luck,
Priscilla Valentine
