Pig Urinating when Drinking

Question
I have a 9 week old potbelly female who is litter box trained however, she seems to have a knee-jerk reaction when drinking water that was prevalent from when we brought her home.  She sticks her snout in to drink and kind of unloads urine while she's drinking.  We thought it was because she was young, just fixed, etc.  She knows her box, goes in it, however this has been the case now for two weeks.  She doesn't do it every time, however it's at least twice a day.  We've changed temperature of water but it's just not stopping this behavior.  Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance and Happy New Year!

Answer
This kind of water drinking - peeing connection is usually caused by water deprivation. It will take her awhile to get over it.

Make sure she has constant access to drinking water. Depriving or restricting her at this point will just make the problem worse.

If she's going into a crate or cage, put a water in with her. You might want to teach her how to drink from a drip bottle, the kind used for rabbits and rodents. She can't tip it or spill it, and will have the reassurance of water when she's thirsty.

Practice strict potty training. Take her to the box often. Once she's in the box, don't let her get out without pottying. As soon as she wakes up in the morning. Before and after breakfast. The instant she wakes up for a nap. At least once every two hours. The idea is to keep her so empty she simply can't pee when she drinks.

After she has peed in the box, give her a drink of water. The idea is to stave off thirst, and have her associate peeing first, then drinking.

By giving her constant access to water, she won't experience the kind of thirst that makes her hold her urine. By taking her to potty often and keeping her bladder fairly empty, she won't have much to empty.

As she's trying to unlearn this behavior, she'll probably make a mistake or two. Put her water dish on a doggie pee pad to catch these accidents.
