Question
We have a 21/2 year old male hairless who is extremmly gentle who just last night has begun acting odd.  When he was not out at dinner we called him with no response-he was laying in the bottom of the cage but raised his head.  He cannot stand or hold up/still now.  No visible injuries-but wants to be cradled like a baby(not like him)  If you touch the lower back neck he tries to bite(VERY unlike him)  We held a water bottle up for him to get  adrink from & as he drank he peed-again not like him when he is being held.  He made the night(did notthink he would)-but is worse now will not drink either and want to be held.  He holds your finger trying to let you move-Trying to reach vet now-any suggestions why we wait?

Answer
He has signs of meningitis.

This is why he is having pain in his lower back and neck since it affects the spine.  Please seek medical attention at once to either have him humanely euthanized or treated if the vet you see knows enough about rat care.  He will need aggressive treatment and its not always a good prognosis.  Continue to cradle him.  He is finding comfort in being with you and being held. He doesnt want to be alone.
If you do not have names of a vet, please let me know w here you live and I will gladly give you some names. This is an emergency though and he needs seen right away .

I am very sorry he is so sick.
