Epileptic Rat?

Question
QUESTION: I have a male rat, approx 6months old, who is having dramatic seizures on a regular basis.  He was living with 6 other males in the 'Rat Mansion', but he now lives alone in the 'Sick Bay' :(
I noticed the seizures about 2 weeks ago, we took him to the vet who checked him over and said he was in great general health.  He put him on Baytril (to help with all his sores and to eliminate a bacterial cause of the seizures) and Phenomav for the seizures.  He also said to put him in a safer home, limited objects, soft materials etc (so we made the 'Sick Bay').
After a week, there was little change, so the vet said to double the dose of the Phenomav (he was having 0.1mL, 2 times a day, now on 0.2mL, 2 times a day) and if no change within 4 days, call back.  It's the 4th day now and I will be calling back, but I was hoping you had any extra advice as I'm getting quite desperate.
Although TicTac (the rat) seems quite happy when he's recovered from the seizures, he does seem lonely and him hurting himself is quite distressing!  He only has 1 toenail left and as well padded as his new home is, he has managed to acquire 2 new cuts on his head.
Grateful for any info
Regards
Jenni

ANSWER: Has the vet tried diazepam (valium)?

Has any lab work been done, such as checking his serum level to determine if there are any metabolic disturbances or imbalance, which would be responsible for seizures?

I am going to take a guess that your in the UK and not the US?

QUESTION: I'm in Perth, Aus.
No lab work has been done yet. Vet did say this is a possible next step, although he did mention that there is little data at the main vet hospital (Murdoch, I believe) as far as blood work goes (I can't remember the exact words, but basically he was saying that there isn't much data to compare... does that make sense?)
He hasn't tried Valium, I will mention that to him today
Thank You!

Answer
Phenomav isnt sold here for use which is why I asked if you were from out of the states.   Its another version of Phenobarbital to be exact.

What your vet may be implying is that possibly he feels the is nothing to compare any possible findings in rats as far as looking for metabolic disorders etc....which makes me wonder how big exotics is in Aus. as compared to the United states. I would guess the vet would be able to contact specialists from the states if needed.

I am sure you are aware that your little guy doesnt necessarily have to have epilepsy to suffer from seizures. what I am saying is, there may be another reason that is causing seizures and if its diagnosed, it can possibly be treated, cured, and the seizures are all gone, allowing your little guy to be seizure free and be able to be back with his rat friends.
