I just purchased two male dumbo rats and when i brought them home one of them peed blood but the next day it went away and from then on it hasnt happened. i have been looking for any more signs of him peeing blood but he seems to be perfectly fine and energetic. He eats and drinks normally. i thought it was a UTI but then the next day it went away . What could it have been cause he had blood on his penis for a day then it went away and hasnt come back . thanks

Answer

Hi Eric

Hematuria isnt always visible to the naked eye.
He could have had a large amount that you were able to see(gross hematuria) and now has red blood cells only a microscope can detect which is known as microscopic hematuria.

How long ago was this?

There is a condition called Pseudohematuria, which is when the urine appears to have blood in it due to red or pink pigmentation that is caused by certain foods or even drugs, but in this case I would say when pertaining to rats, it would be from foods. This can appear to be blood in the urine but when a urinalysis is done, there are no red blood cells detected.  Feeding the rat alot of reddish colored foods such as carrots or red fruits like strawberries can do this. However, its not a real common thing and the rat would have to consume a large amount of these foods for this to occur, but it "can" happen.

If he had a UTI, he would more than likely show urinary frequency, possibly licking at his genital area due to burning or discomfort, and show other signs of illness as time progressed.  I would keep an eye on him though just to be sure your not missing something.
