Question
I have a 2 year old girl who last week I noticed was a bit quiet but otherwise ok.Just thought she was getting a bit waeker in her back legs due to age.  I have Debbie Documens rat health guide and Last Sunday followed her chart for lethargy/depression. I started her on Baytril twice daily at 0.2 ml doses.  I was going to start her on prednisone if she got worse. She was still ambling about ant eating etc.  I thought I saw the start of a head tilt Friday so put her on prednisone (1mg) she is just under 1 pound in weight.  Got dose from Debbies book. So she's now on 1mg prednisone and 0.2 baytril twice daily. Yesterday I saw the classic holding paws out straight, trouble eating hard food, then my heart went in my throat.  I lost her sister last month thats why I have fresh stocks of these drugs in, Id got them on repeat prescription.  Today her head is tilted to the floor, she can't eat hard food, so I have her on baby food and Im giving her meds in Nutrical.  Im worried she isnt getting enough fluid, havent seen her use her bottle for 2 days.  I have been syringing/eye dropping apple juice in her today.  I have tried putting a magnet on the bottom of a tin lid to hold fluids.  I don't know what else I can do, please advise if you have any ideas (Im typing through tears!)I have adjusted hammock etc in her cage, she can still get in and out, she can reach her bottles if she wants to.
Thanks for any advice.
Sam

Answer
I speak to Debbie a few times a month, touching base with her about more difficult cases I get from time to time. She is a big help and a great resource for sure.  Anyhow, it does sound like she may have a pituitary tumor.  I am just really sorry. I hate this for you and your little girl. Your doing pretty much all you can do for her at this point, including the use of steroids for the inflammation that the mass may be causing.  It wouldnt hurt if she was given something strong for pain, like torbutrol.

Add some water to the baby food as well to give more fluids.  Offer some soy milk or formula for added nutrition.  keep her warm and safe and basically, do what you have been doing.  I am going to assume she is unable to grasp with her front paws?
