I think I may have really frightened my rat.

Question
Hi,

I have two rats, both males about 3 months old. When I first got them I was really excited, and made the classic mistake of getting them out too early. I've managed to get over the hurdle with both of them, but they were still not quite sure of me, and were hesitant of coming near if they were out exploring. Yesterday, I had them on my bedroom floor, when I tried getting them back, it was a nightmare. Managed to get Eddie.. but Mac was proving more difficult, I eventually found him with my jumpers under the bed, but he was so frightened! Now he wont come out of the tunnel in their cage.. or when he does he runs when I'm too near. He'll take treats but won't come too close. If I'm patient enough.. will this problem fix itself?

Please help, I know I've done totally it all totally the wrong way.. but I don't want to give them up!

Rebecca

Answer
With patience and a little trust training, he will eventually come around, I'm sure. In the meantime, keep them in a smaller room with nothing to hide under so that this doesn't happen again (I usually recommend a small bathroom). The less incidences you give them to mistrust you, the less it'll happen, and the more they'll learn to love ya. Good luck!
