antibiotics for life

Question
Hello,

I have a 1 year ten months old rat who had been treated twice with antibiotics for upper respiratory disease (Mycoplasma).
He took doxycycline and baytril simultaneously.  even after both treatment which lasted about 1 month each, he always seems to sneeze.  So I'm aware he may need to be on antibiotics for life.  Also I bought a nebulizer which I used for one of my other rat which was ill also.
My question is:  what is the dosage per day of baytril or doxycycline for life treatment. is it the same as for a 30 days treatment?
also which one is best and could I use the nebulizer with gentocin along with albuterol.

Thanks,

Dany

Answer

Once the rat has been treated with baytril for a full 30 days using the proper dose, prophylactic treatment should be once a day using the baytril but it should be a high end dose.  So, if he normally gets .20 ccs twice a day he should get .30 once a day and so on.

As for the nebulizer, you can use gentocin and albuterol in it as well. Keep in mind the gentocin should be used short term only and also be sure the rat takes  in alot of fluids while on gentocin since it is very nephrotoxic.

Have you ever used zithromax instead of baytril?
