Question
I wanted to know if a male amazon or yellow nape will start sitting on a egg that was laid? I have 2 birds in one cage and we know that one of them is a female but thought the other was a male. Now I'm not sure because the male is sitting on the egg. Please let me know if you anything about this.

Thanks,

Vanessa

Answer
Hi, Vanessa.  Thanks for posting!

Usually, the male amazon doesn't sit on the egg(s).  He may go in/out of the breeding box and/or stay in with the female at times (this depends on the individual bird).

Female parrots can lay infertile eggs without the benefit of a male.  This happens when their hormones start running rampant.  Therefore, you could have 2 female amazons with 1 laying infertile eggs.

You should really have your amazons DNA sexed.  It only costs $20 per bird and is as simple as clipping a nail just short enough to get a couple drops of blood.  You place the blood on a test card that you can get free from Avian Biotech or Zoogen Labs, mail the card and payment back to the lab, and in about a week you'll have the test results.
