Question
Hi there, our family cat got inside my daughters room and somehow attacked the mouse while it was inside the cage, he has onlyn been with us for a week.  The ijuries dont seem to be too bad.  There is quite a nasty abbrasion on the top of his nose but it does appear to be healing, though he is making a rattlin g or nibbling type sound which i thought might be a comforting or shock like mechanism.  He also had a little peircing which looked to be on hus back but has cleared up in the last few days.  My largest concern is how lethargic he seems to be, he is moving, but very not much at all and im worried about his eating and drinking.  We have been providing him with food and water though he doesnt seem too interested and todayh spent a lrge part of his time outside his house, with his nose wedged between the wire cage between his feet, though still moved slightly when i touched his tail (to ensure he could move), his breathing is also quite fast and his fur puffy,  please help we have since moved the cage to a more secure environment and just hope that he will recover how long do mice usually stay in shock for?

Answer
When a mouse gets into a situation like being harmed or frightened they go into shock. It can kill them because they are so fragile and unable to sometimes recover. If you cannot afford to take the mouse to the vet to make sure there are no internal injuries then do as you are now. Keep the mouse with food/water, in a safe environment, and try to cover the cage for a few days to give him more stress free time. The covering of the cage will keep it dark and give him time to rest w/o being afraid of having to watch his surrounds. Unfortunately there is limited amount of what you can do at this point but try those things and see if he can get past the shock to become his normal mousy self.
