hermit crabs by themselves

Question
I have been told that hermit crabs will die if they arent in pairs is this true

Answer
The do prefer company. In the wild they live in large colonies of hundred and hundreds of crabs. A crab who is alone will often stop being active and just sit.

I would definitely recommend a buddy for your crab. Two crabs don't use any more resources than just the one.
