Question
i'm sonic...i'm a baby guinea pig.  I live in a cage with a flat bottom.  I have a cardboard house, cedar wood chips, pellets, water, and occasional lettuce.  I just started laying on my side with my foot in the air.  I squeak when you pick me up.  I used to run around my cage but now i don't run.  I sit contently when you hold me because I love to be held.  I'm still eating fine, and my eyes are clear.  What could be wrong.

Answer
Hi Sonic!

First and foremost you should tell your mommy that Cedar woodchips are very harmful for you and your fellow cousins. Cedar can cause URI and most commonly Liver disease and failure, as do Pine chips. You need to get your mommy to switch your bedding to either Aspen, Carefresh, Cell Sorb, Yesterdays News, Pelleted Pine, Kiln Dried Pine, Fleece or Towels. Have your mom visit www.cavycages.com for more information about cages and bedding.

Your mom also needs to give you unlimited Timothy hay as this is a vital food in a cavies diet as it helps aid digestion, you also need 1-2 cups of fresh vegetables daily so you do not develop scurvy. Some good vegetables for you are Bell Peppers, Parsley, Cilantro, Dandelions, Grass, Clover, Romaine Lettuce, Green/Red Leaf Lettuce, Kale, Spinach, Endive and Escarole.

Many cavies lay on their sides, but I am not sure what you mean by your foot in the air, did you hurt your foot some how? Could you have mites or lice?
