I think he is bored.

Question
My guinea pig is about 5 months old. All of a sudden he started eating around his food bowl! He has managed to chew away a good portion of it. I got him a new one and he has already started to bite at that one, too. I figure I should probably get a different bowl, one he can't chew up. but, I wanted to make sure there wasn't something wrong.

We play with him a lot to keep him from getting bored. Should we get him a friend? (We have a pretty big cage for him, 40 inches long by about 18 inches wide.)

He is chewing through his bowls not because he is bored but because he needs something to chew on. Try getting him a ceramic bowl and some chew toys and see if that helps. With a ceramic bowl he can't chew it up and with chew toys he'll have something to chew on instead of his bowl.

It sounds like you give him plenty of attention and love, so his chewing on his bowl is just for lack of something better to chew on. Guinea Pig's teeth continually grow so they constantly need something to chew on.
