Pregnate Guniea pig?

Question
I recently bought a crested guinea pig girl from the pet shop. It usually only has tiny 4 week old babies but my girl was almost twice the size of the others but still small, so must be older. I was just wondering how early they can get pregnant as she was very thin with a bit of a bulged belly. The belly is not enormously large just slightly possibly more than normal, though i can't remember what their belly should normally look like at that age. How old could she be and is it possible to be preg that early?

Answer
Hi Georgi,

A female guinea pig can be pregnant from any age, if she has been kept with males aged 4 weeks or older. As she is from a pet shop, it is very likely that she's been kept with boys and has fallen pregnant. A guinea pig's gestation period is 68-72 days, so they do tend to get big quite quickly. Keep an eye on her, and if you noticed her belly growing out of proportion with the rest of her, and that she's eating and drinking more ... then she's probably pregnant. Girls are often much bigger than boys, so she could just be slightly older (probably 6-8 weeks) than the other guinea that were there. If you decide that she is pregnant; let me know and I can advise you on what to do when the babies come ...

Jenny.
