Question
Can guinea pigs drink milk?

Answer
Hi Staci,

Yes and no.

Generally speaking, cow's milk is unsuitable for guinea pigs because the milk they produce to feed to their babies is low in lactose. Therefore, the milk we drink has too much lactose in it for them to digest.

However, I think a pregnant sow with a newborn litter will enjoy bread soaked in cow's milk as a one-off treat. If you can get a low-lactose or lactose-free milk this will be better.

It's best to stick to water, though. In a bottle, emptied and refilled with cold tap water each day.

If you have any other questions, just ask!

Jenny.
