back sores

QUESTION: hi i have not much money to take my guinea pig to the vet and he has a open red bloody sore on his back!! but its only one spot and every time i turn around hes biting it! what should i do?! please i need a answer!!!! his only like 3 months old i got him in March and his name is Marley hes just a little baby! from Ashley USA


ANSWER: Hi Ashley

I think we can treat this without you going to the vet.You will need to get some SUDOCREAM ($4) from a chemist/pharmacy.
Get an old clean sock and cut the toe off,and make small holes for his legs this is going to be worn by Marley as a kind of body stocking.
Next clean the area with warm water and a cotton wool ball.
Then when you are sure its dry,put the Marley into the sock and pop his legs through the holes so he can still walk about.
Tomorrow when the wound has had time to dry out a little,remove the stocking and put a little of the cream onto the wound.It will heal it and will help woth the itch.
Replace the sock,you might have to put some tape around the middle so Marley does not wriggle out of it but please do not tape up too tightly.
Check the wound every day and try to keep Marley from scratching it. You should see some improvement in about a week.
After about a week the itch should be a lot less - this week will give the wound time to heal as long as you can keep him off it.

QUESTION: thank you sooo much for this answer.

but i have a couple of questions about it. what do i do if he tries to eat the sock or the tape?
and do i cut a hole for his bottom too so he can go to the bathroom?

ANSWER: Hi again.
yes do cut a hole for him to poo! I forgot to mention it.
Also he should not try to eat the tape,I used red elcetrical tape on my Ron.
It should not matter if he chews the sock.

Hi
the red tape is used by electricians and is also known as insulation tape.
It is rubbery and has a bit of stretch to it.
It does not conduct electricity hence used by electricians.
I found this was better foor holding Rons sock in place but if you can get away without using tape then all the better.
You can also use parcel tape,just remember NOT to have it too tight
