Siberian Hampster Babies

Question
Ms. Kelly,

At what age do dwarf siberian's become sexually viable and when can I separate babies from mother?

We recently got one but she (unexpectedly) gave birth 2 days later.  The pet store we got them from will take them and we trust them to take care of them, but where we live Spanish is the primary language and we have a difficult time getting a good answer about when we should separate the babies. They say "Just bring them in when they have open eyes, fur and are walking around looking for food"

Is it possible for you to clear this up so we give appropriate time with the mother before they start multiplying?!

Thanks so much,

Eric

Answer
Hi Eric,

Dwarf hamsters usually start to breed around 3-4 months of age.  Dwarf babies are fully weaned at 3 weeks of age.  At this time, they should be separated into 2 cages, according to sex.  The female babies may stay with the mother until you're ready to give them to the pet store, and the males will need to go to a separate cage.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
