gerbil sick

Question
We have a gerbil that has been declining in health for about two
weeks.  She does not do the normal things that he used to do,
like gnawing, running around the cage etc.  Her eyes are
practically closed and sleeps in positions like on his back which
he has never in the past done.  she is still breathing but does
not seem like he is going to recover from whatever is wrong.  I
cannot spend the money ($50) required to take her to the vet.  Is
there anything i can buy or do to help her.  she is about two
years old.   Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello, to be honest with you, your gerbil has reached it's golden years. The average lifespan of a gerbil is 2-4 years and so I don't think there's anything a vet could do. It sounds like your gerbil has an internal infection and I really suggest just keeping her warm because I don't know anything on the market that can really help save your gerbil. I'm sorry I can't give you anymore advice, it really just sounds like old age to me.
