Gerbil & balding on back

Question
Hi Charlotte, one of my Gerbils - WobbleyBob has developed a  half circle fur loss on his back, it starts on his lower back and forms to the bottom of the back to the tail.  He still has fur there but it's thinner than the rest.  Is there something wrong with him?  I'm not sure whether to take him to the vets.  He is eating and seems ok otherwise although has started sleeping more than usual.  He's about 3 months old.  Thanks

Answer
Hello Sian,

The half circle of hair that is thinner is quite normal, all young gerbils around that age seem to get it. I currently have 2 young gerbils who also have it in exactly the same place and in the same shape too. The fur changes as they get older, and i think it is part of the process of turning into an adult, although i am not 100% sure. However, i am certain it is nothing to worry about!! It can stay like that for quite a while, but as long as the skin underneath looks ok, and not sore etc then you don't need to worry!!

I hope this helps, and has eased your mind,
but do ask again if you are still worried about anything,
Thanks,
Charlie.
