old age hair loss!

Question
Recently, I noticed that our dwarf hamster has started losing her hair!  It's disappearing gradually--and symmetrically (!)--from her backside (rump area--her tail still has fur, as does most of her back).  She's about 20-21 months old now, and I've read that it's normal for hamsters to lose some fur as they get older.  However, I am wondering if the hair loss will continue until she's completely bald or if it will stabilize.  I am also wondering if there is any treatment that will help slow down her hair loss or possibly reverse it.  One hamster breeder suggests adding yeast to the diet, but I'm nervous about trying anything too "different" that may stress out my hamster.  Any advice would be appreciated--thanks!

Answer
Dear Elle,

this is normal, and with every hamster it varies. For the most part, they will not loose all of their fur, they will still be slightly fuzzy, and even have patches of full, normal fur. By adding vitamins to their everyday diet, you can help their fur to be thicker, and silkier. Vitamins come in all different kinds, liquids, solid treat type, and even gummy like. Shop around and see what you and your hammie like the best. This won't effect her too much, and it wont stop her from eating or anything. Protein can also be helpful. Try hard-boiled eggs, of even plain boiled chicken. Your hamster will love it, and it will be a good source of protein. Just make sure you don't give her too much!
Also, as she continues to lose fur, make sure she has plenty of nesting material(cotton balls work the best)to keep her warm.
E-mail me back with any further questions!
