Hi Natalie,

I know it may be hard but you must not interfere!!! You will only make the mother stressed and make the situation worse!!! She may just be moving it around, as it is normal for them to pick them up in their mouths and move them about. Without interfering try and check again to see how she is. It is very rare for mothers to canabilse their babies, but if she has she will have done it for a reason, either because the baby is in danger, not well, or has died!!! It is very sad to witness, but is natural for the mother to do!!!

Let me know what happens,
Charlie.

Hi Natalie,

10 babies is a lot for the mother to cope with, and if her milk isn't the best quality then not all the babies will survive. Don't forget also that she won't have 10 teats, so they can't all feed at the same time. It is survival of the strongest!! It is sad, but natural. Just don't interfere, and hopefully the rest will survive.

You can try improving the quality of her milk by giving her more protein in her diet, such as human baby food, which you can get from your local shop, or you can buy it from my website at www.freewebs.com/gerbilworld/shop.htm. This well help her a lot!

Let me know how the others progress, and do ask if you need further help.

Thanks,
Charlie.

Answer
Hello!

You can touch them now if you are confident that the mother knows and trusts you and your sister. If she doesn't recognise your smell she may become aggressive to the babies.

Try washing your hands, rubbing them in her bedding a bit so you smell of them, and then just lay your hand on the bottom of the cage and let them all come and investigate you. By doing it this way you are allowing the mother to become comfortable with you and your sister. Only do this for short periods at a time to keep stress to a minimum!!

After a day or two you can gently scoop up the babies and hold them for just a few minutes at a time to begin with. Be very careful as at this age they are very jumpy and skittish, so hold them somewhere safe, such as over a bed or sofa!!!

Good Luck,
Let me know how you get on!!
Charlie.
