AnswerHi John
The Syrian hamsters are my favorites. They are the largest of the hamsters and need a large cage to live in. They are nocturnal so they often don't wake up until evening, although the females often come out a lot more during the day time than the males. Male Syrian hamsters are often easier to handle than females but they do sleep a lot too. Syrians must live in their own cages otherwise they fight. They need to have a wheel in their cage (not one with spokes as they can get their feet caught up), and one that is large enough - some of the standard wheels are a bit small for a large Syrian hamster. They like climbing so a cage with bars is the best type.
Russian dwarf hamsters are cute, but not everyone likes them. Winter Whites are fine - but with dwarf hamsters you're better off getting a couple (of the same sex) as they like company. If they do end up fighting you'd need to separate them though. Campbell dwarf hamsters can be a bit temperamental - they seem to be fine while they are babies, but when they are a few months old often their personalities change and they can start biting. They have a bit of a reputation for this.
Roborovskis are cute - they are the smallest and they are fun to watch - however, they are very fast and difficult to handle. All the dwarf hamsters can be kept in a tank or cage - they don't climb much but they do like to run through tunnels/tubes etc.
Hope you find one you like.
