Ferrett Rescue

Question
Followup To Question -
I am in over my head.  I purchased a ferret for my daughter, and then ended up taking in a ferret that needed rescuing.  It was one of the biggest mistakes I have made. I didn't research the care that would be needed or time that would be involved in caring for ferretts.   They are WONDERFUL little creatures, but we have found that we are not able to give them the time or attention that they need. We have come to the conclusion that we need to find a new home for them.   I don't want to give or sell them to anyone who would end up not caring for them so I am at a loss as to what to do.   Do you have any suggestions in how I should go about finding a new place for them?   I would appreciate your input.

Hello,
I am sorry you found yourself in this situation, but you are not alone. A lot of people don't realize until too late how much work these little critters are, and usually the petstore workers won't tell you. I am very glad you are trying to find them a good home!
My best suggestion is to find a ferret rescue in your area.
When surfing the WEB, try typing in "ferret rescue [your city & state]"...and it should bring up a ferret rescue in your area.
For instance "Ferret rescue Jackson, Maine".
If you live in or around Southern Ohio, Email me back and I can direct you some of the ones I had worked with.
Also, here are some "by state" rescue websites that may help.

http://www.ferretcentral.org/for-others/database.html

http://www.greenpeople.org/humanesociety.htm

If they don't have your state listed, then email the ones closest to you to see if they have any info on a ferret rescue near you. Also, one last resort, if you call your local animal shelter, they may have some info on local rescues as well. Good luck, I hope this helped!

AMY - THANKS FOR GETTING BACK TO ME.   YES, I DO LIVE IN THE SOUTHERN OHIO AREA.   WE ARE IN BUTLER COUNTY.   I LOVE SASSY AND ELF AND DEFINATELY HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT WHERE EVER THEY GO, IT WILL BE A LOVING AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT.  I DON'T WANT THEM USED FOR ANY MEDICAL TESTING, OR TO BE NEGLECTED.    IT IS VERY HEARTBREAKING FOR OUR FAMILY TO HAVE TO FIND THEM A NEW HOME, BUT WE HAVE TO PUT THEIR NEEDS BEFORE OURS.    PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH ORGANIZATIONS YOU HAVE DEALT WITH DIRECT OR IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE THAT WOULD BE INTRESTED IN THEM.    ELF WAS A NEGLECTED LITTLE GUY WHEN WE GOT HIM, SO WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT HE WON'T BE PUT IN THAT SITUATION AGAIN.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP.

Answer
Hello again Kathy,
I am going to email you a list of rescues in Ohio and they should definitely be able to help you. I did some volunteer work with Lori Sies, but there may be another rescue on the list that is closer to you.
They are very diligent about screening the homes that the ferrets go to, so you don't have to worry. Every applicant has to go through a screening before being approved for adopting a ferret, and then they also follow up.
Good luck to you, and let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
