Question
What can you tell me about ferret urine on concrete. I lost a sale on my home because of a past tenant who had a daughter with a pet ferret on the lower level of the home that is carpet over a concrete floor. The floor was treated and new carpet was installed. Will the ferret urine absorb into the concrete permanently? And the potential buyer claims that ferrets have a stink gland like skunks do that also gets into the concrete permanently. What can you tell me about this also?

Answer
Hello friend,

Here's the good news: ferret urine is worlds apart from cat urine with virtually none of that "ammonia" punch.  The bad news: any kind of urine, be it ferret or otherwise, can seep into the concrete and cause unpleasant smells over time.

First try "Nature's Miracle".  Its one of the best pet smell removers out there, and the only one I use.  It can be purchased online and sometimes at your local pet or hardware store.

If that fails, try this: purchase from a commercial chemical supplier a cleaner or sanitizer product that contains at least 5% active of didecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and dilute the product with water at 5-1 one.  Let the chemical soak into the concrete fully then apply three coats (allow to dry in between coats) of water based or solvent based concrete sealer. This method locks in the odor and allows the chemical to continue killing the source underneath the sealer.

And ferrets are related to skunks.  :-)  But I highly, highly doubt that this ferret (who was the daughter's pet) was "in tact".  Most ferrets are spayed and descented when they are little, then sold as pets.  Only if you buy from a breeder can you get an in-tact ferret, and even then its unlikely that it wouldn't be descented.

If those methods fail, or of there is anything further I can help you with please feel free to get back to me.

Sincerely,

Stephenie
