Question
My friend has just got 3 ferrets that have pasted from owner to owner for a wile. 2 boys and one girl (all fixed) the little girl doesn't like her new owner and so he is giving her to me. My question is that I'm afraid she might get sick or lonely without her friends. Can this happen? And if so what should I do? Would geting her a new friend be good?

Answer
Hello LoReta,

Ferrets can get very attached to their owners and ferret buddies.  It is not unheard of for one to die of a broken heart after the loss of a loved one.  Whether or not she would benefit from a new buddy depends on her.  Some ferrets instantly get along, while others can be a bit more difficult and even fight for dominance.  I do agree that ferrets tend to do better with other weasel-friends, but not every ferret enjoys the company of others.

In your situation I would give it a bit of time before introducing a new ferret buddy.  Wait until she is more comfortable with her new environment and perhaps find a friend for her in the next few months.  If you do, consider adopting from a local ferret shelter.  There are SO many lovely ferrets that need homes, and most people do not realize such organizations exist.  If you need help finding one near you, please do not hesitate to ask.
